University of Madras is a public state university situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. It was founded in 1857 by an act of the Legislative Council of India. The university expanded in the 20th century with the establishment of various departments and their associated facilities. The university had also published a dictionary, named as Tamil Lexicon, between the year 1926 and 1939. It is the first dictionary which was being published in any Indian language.
It is one of the oldest universities in India. It has also been rewarded by 5-star rating by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). For its teaching and research outcomes, the university has been consistently ranked among other national and international universities.
