University of Calcutta, also known as Calcutta University or CU, is a public state university situated in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was founded in 1857 by a Calcutta University Act. The land was given by then Maharaja of Darbhanga, Maharaja Maheshwar Singh Bahadur. Initially, the university had adopted the education and administrative outline of the University of London, but later made changes in its constitution. The graduate degree to the first female student was awarded in 1882.

It has gained a position of a five-star university by the University Grants Commission.

Financial Support

The university provides all possible financial support to the students who excel in their studies and who are in need of funds to pursue higher studies. The numbers of scholarships are offered to undergraduate and postgraduate students in various disciplines. Many scholarships are awarded by the external funding sources such as Government of India.
