Sampurnanand Sanskrit University is a public university situated in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was founded in 1791 as the Government Sanskrit College. It received the university status in 1958 and became the Sanskrit University. Its name was changed to Sampurnanand Sanskrit University in 1974.

The main aim of its establishment was to provide easy and affordable education to the common people. The idea was proposed by the Jonathan Duncan, the resident of the East India Company of British Raj. The Governor General, Lord Cornwallis, of that time, donated the funds for its foundation. Post graduation programs were implemented in 1857. The examination system was started in 1880.

Saraswati Bhavan Granthalaya (library) of the university was constructed in 1894 with the purpose of preserving the thousands of manuscripts. More than 400 books in a series have been published by the university, which is called as the Saraswati Bhavana.

The research institute of the university is involved in a variety of research activities since its establishment. When it had Sanskrit College status, all related activities were executed by the Principal of the College. He had also carried out research on the manuscripts whose new versions are preserved in the Saraswati Bhavan.

Now, all research activities are managed by the Director of the research institute. The research work related to the Sanskrit language and literature has contributed greatly towards many Sanskrit journals and books.


Indian and non-Indian applicants can apply to study at the university. The applicants with the minimum qualification of a 10th pass from any recognized institute of India can apply for any certificate course. For postgraduate study, an applicant must have completed his/her graduation in the same subject for which he/she is applying for. The university campus is located in the heart of Varanasi city nearby the Varuna bridge.
