Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, also termed as Rutgers University, Rutgers, and RU, is a public research university situated in New Jersey, United States. It is one of the largest institutions of higher education in New Jersey. It was established in 1766 as the Queen’s College. Later in 1825, its name was changed after Colonel Henry Rutgers, U.S. Revolutionary War hero and philanthropist, and became Rutgers College. It gained the university status in 1925 and became Rutgers University. It was designated the State University of New Jersey in 1945.
