Memorial University of Newfoundland, also known as Memorial University and MUN, is a public research university situated in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It was established in 1925 as the Memorial University College at one property located on city’s Parade Street. Initially, teaching sessions were started with only 57 students. Later in 1949, it got the university status with the name ‘Memorial University’. With the passage of time, MUN had expanded its programs and educational facilities.

MUN has four campuses.

  • ‘St. John’s Campus’, located in the centre of the city is the largest campus of MUN. It is a home to the MUN’s 6 faculties and 6 schools.
  • ‘Grenfell Campus’, located in Corner Brook on the west coast of Newfoundland. It is spread over 185 acres of land and is a home to the environmental and fine arts programs.
  • ‘Marine Institute’, located on Ridge Road in St. John's offers fisheries and marine training and has all top-notch marine educational facilities.
  • ‘Harlow Campus’, located in the Old Harlow, Essex, the campus offers courses in various disciplines.

These campuses have accommodation facilities, food services, libraries, archives and others.

Extra-curricular activities

MUN’s sports teams are known as Memorial Sea-Hawks. It also has men’s and women’s varsity teams that compete in the Atlantic University Sport. Several other fitness and recreational facilities are also available at MUN. Throughout the year, more than 100 clubs and societies are engaged in organizing various social, cultural, political and recreational activities.
