Firstly, it was founded as the Toronto Baptist College in 1881. Later, it was officially named after a famous Canadian Senator and banker, William McMaster. The courses related to Arts and Theology was taught in 1890, whereas the first degree was presented in 1894.

Westdale campus is the main campus of the McMaster University. It is located in Hamilton’s striking Westdale neighborhood, covers nearly 377 acres of land. It comprises 12 residence buildings for students, four large libraries, a research reactor and a planetarium. The main campus also includes one of the best public galleries in Canada, known as McMaster Museum of Art.
It also operates over 200 student clubs and organizations which are engaged in different activities both academic and recreation.
The main campus is divided into three areas i.e. Core, North and South campus.
