Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, shortly termed as IIT Kanpur or IITK, is a public research university situated in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was founded in 1959, by an Act of Parliament, as the initial step of the Indian Institute of Technology chain. It was first started in a room of Harcourt Butler Technological Institute in Kanpur. But later in 1963, it was shifted to its current location.
As per the National Institutional Ranking Framework-2016, the institute is ranked at 5th position in the list of ‘India’s Top 100 Engineering Institutes for Research and Teaching’. The institute has also marked its place in QS World University Rankings and QS Asian University Rankings.

IIT Kanpur has research and development centre equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. IIT Kanpur is the first Indian institute who has its own supercomputer, as well as the first one to initiate a helicopter ferry service connecting the Institute to Lucknow. Not only this, the country’s first nano-satellite ‘Jugnu’ is designed by the students and scholars of IITK.
Admission to undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. programs is made through JEE-Advanced, JAM, GATE, CEED or CAT based on the type of academic program to enroll. In addition, some of the applicants may also be contacted for written tests or interviews.
IITK Campus is located on the Grand Trunk Road, which is nearly 15km in the west of Kanpur city. It is spread over 1000 acres of land donated by the government of Uttar Pradesh. It has a big library, computer centre, well-equipped laboratories, auditorium, gymnasium, SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Centre and much more.
The institute also provides boys’ and girls’ hostels, health care centre, banking facility, shopping complex, media technology centre, women’s association and various other facilities.
Students Activity Centre (SAC) is a hub of the extracurricular activities. The centre is operated by the Gymkhana at the institute. It has open-air theatre, courts for various sports, adventure sports club, joggers club and several other hobby clubs that give students an opportunity to pursue their passion and to attain new skills.
The inter hall sports competitions are held, one for only freshers and other is open for all students. Several sports events are organized in which students interested in volleyball, basketball, table tennis, weightlifting, athletics, badminton etc. take part and compete.
Merit-cum-Means Scholarships is awarded to undergraduate students on the merit basis and on the parents’ annual income basis. These scholarships are also given by the alumni of the institute. Other types of scholarships include Sports Scholarships based on the performance in the sports, and Aditya Birla Scholarship based on the interview of Top 20 students of JEE Advanced test.
