Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, shortly termed as IITD or IIT Delhi, is a public research university situated in South Delhi, India. IITD was founded in 1961 as a result of its birth from Delhi Technological University when Chemical Technology and Textile Technology were shifted out of the university. Originally, it was registered as the College of Engineering & Technology and later got the status of the university in 1961.
It is ranked at 4rth position in India’s ‘Top 100 Engineering Institutes for Research and Teaching’ in 2016. It has also gained a position in the world’s top 200 universities -2015.

IITD has various research centres of excellence, committed to making a difference in the world. Each department of IIT Delhi focuses on the research on their key areas. Since its establishment, the institute has been playing a pioneering role in producing research scholars in science and technology fields. The students and faculty both work together in the research of their areas of interest or study.
To study at IITD, applicants must go through JEE, GATE, CEED or JAM test based on the type of program they are applying for, i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate. IITD Campus, located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi, is spread over 325 acres of land and is surrounded by city’s attractions such as Qutub Minar and Lotus Temple. The campus has four sectors - Students Residential Area, Faculty and Staff Residential Area, Student Recreational Area and Academic Area.
The other facilities available at the campus include world-class laboratories, seminar rooms, banks, post office, stationery shop, shopping complexes, amphitheater and many others.
The campus has boys hostels, girls’ hostels and apartments for married students, all equipped with modern facilities including a computer room and the internet.
The institute has various cultural clubs. The Student Activity Center (SAC) at IITD operates the extracurricular activities such as sports, music, theatre etc. SAC has a swimming pool, pool and billiards rooms, gym, courts for indoor sports, music room, debating room and theatre to host concerts.
IIT Delhi offers scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate students on the basis of merit and the family’s financial status. Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarships are awarded to help students to pursue their study at the institute without any funding trouble. Tuition fee concession is provided to all SC/ST students irrespective of their financial status.
