Indian Institute of Science, shortly known as IISc is a public university located in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. It was founded in 1909 by Jamsetji Tata, a founder of Tata Group and Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV, the Maharaja of Mysore. It was started with Departments of General and Applied Chemistry. Later with the passage of time, the institute had introduced several departments and relevant courses. With master’s degree in engineering, IISc became the first institute in India for such initiative.
The institute is ranked 11th in the world by QS World Universities rankings 2016, thus became one of the two educational institutes in India (another is IIT Delhi) for receiving such award. It was the first Indian Institute to mark a place in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015-2016 with 99th rank.

IISc has two campuses.
Both campuses feature canteens, gym, sports complex, dining halls, restaurants, library, laboratories, men’s and women’s hostels, accommodation for faculty and staff, and several other amenities.
The IISc Gymkhana is the sports and culture centre that provides arts, sports and recreation facilities to the students and faculty. IISc members can spend time on extracurricular activities along with their study and research. Spreads over 26 acres of campus land, Gymkhana has 27 sports and cultural clubs.
Gymkhana organizes various events and activities throughout the year to maintain the liveliness, unity and buoyancy in the institute.
