Duke University is a private research university situated in Durham, North Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1838 as Brown's Schoolhouse by a group of Methodists and Quakers. In 1924, The Duke Endowment was established by Washington Duke's son, James B. Duke, who had donated funds for several purposes including Trinity College (previous name of Duke University). Due to this reason, the institution was renamed after the Duke.
